How to Select a Cremation Urn

Adrienne Crowther / 2011-10-19

There's no doubt that cremation rates are on the rise, both in the US, and especially, worldwide. Currently, the US average of cremation as an end of life option is nearly 34%. Some countries, such as Japan, are experiencing nearly 100% cremation. This trend points to the many options available regarding safekeeping of the ashes. Many people choose to disperse the ashes in a place that was special to the loved one. Other people keep the ashes in a cremation urn, which can be placed in a designated spot in the family's home, garden or cemetary niche. Yet others choose to inter the ashes within a burial urn. All of these options are commonplace and perfectly acceptable. The final decision is merely a matter of personal preference.

One of the first factors to be considered when selecting an urn, whether it's a cremation urn or burial urn, is size. The general criteria is to calculate one cubic inch per pound (determined by weight of person at the time of passing). There is some room for debate in this method, in that body compositions, including bone structures and densities may vary. This is a good general measure, however, and is the common calculation that is used currently. The average cremation urn for an adult measures approximately 200 cubic inches. This is a good choice, however, many adults, at the time of death weight much less than 200 pounds, especially after a long illness. Having said that, an urn of smaller dimensions (130-150 cubic inches) is sometimes large enough.

A keepsake urn is a wise choice when the ashes are divided among family and friends, and/or a portion is scattered and another portion is kept. Keepsake urns vary in size from very small pieces that contain a very small amount of ashes, or larger urns that can hold much more. There is quite a bit of flexibility and variety in size for this option.

The next consideration involves style, color, and material. Many of the urns in today's marketplace are quite conventional, to appeal to a large number of consumers. However, this is a very personal decision that reflects the spirit, personality and preferences of the loved one. It is therefore recommended to take this next consideration into account when making this investment. A common material for cremation urns is ceramic. Most ceramic vessels are quite durable and should stand up to the test of time. When purchasing a ceramic urn, one might ask about the strength of the ceramic material. Also, many people prefer to seal the piece, to ensure that the contents are held within the piece securely. If this issue is of concern to the buyer, then it would be prudent to consider this factor. Color and style also play an important role in the purchasing decision. For example, if the loved one was fond of the ocean, then an urn with shades of blue might be appropriate. An urn for a garden lover might include images of flowers, or spring-like colors. Someone with a modern aesthetic might like a more abstract design with distinct uses of color and shape. Urns are also available in wood, glass, metal, or even biodegradable materials. It's important to think about the personal preferences of the person being honored. Many people have an affinity for all things wood, or the forest or nature. There are many wooden urns today that are made from a variety of trees: birch, mahogany, cedar, and much more. Each wood has inherent patterns and colors that add beauty to the piece.

Metal urns are sturdy and interesting, especially for those who like a more modern style. They're also a lovely choice for an outdoor piece. Some cremation urns are designed to be displayed outdoors in a garden or sitting area. Metal can withstand weather conditions.

Green, or environmental products are becoming more and more popular. Urns can be made of fibrous materials that will biodegrade into the earth or water. This option can add to a memorial ritual, whereas the container is placed into the earth, to return back to the earth, or float down a river or out to sea to become one with those environments.

Lastly, there is the cost factor to be considered. Most people have a budget in mind. The prices of urns are as varied as any commodity, so discretion is advised. Generally, however, most ceramic urns can be found within a range of $90-$1,000, and more, depending on size and detail of design. The same is true for all other materials. It is important to know that there are many options available, with wide varieties in price and style.
