Pros and Cons of Garden Bench Materials
By Harry Truman

Garden benches are the soul of your garden. If you don't have a garden bench, where else will you be able to sit peacefully to enjoy and appreciate your garden's scents and beauty? Besides thinking about the right setting and placing of your bench in the garden there are other significant features to consider. First and most important of them is material. Choosing the appropriate material is important because it may directly influence how long your bench will last. For example, you may often throw parties for your many friends or you plan to spend a lot of time playing with your kids in the garden and using the bench. Therefore, substance from which the bench is made needs to be strong and reliable to endure all those challenges. Also, weather conditions can influence the life longevity of these constructions quite a bit. These include hot burning sun, heavy rain, snow, etc.

There are numerous materials that can be used in making of a garden bench, where some are more commonly used than others. But in the end, it all comes down to what appearance you are trying to achieve. Wood is often referred to as the classic outdoor furniture option. There are also garden benches made from stone, granite, concrete, iron or plastic.

Every material has its own advantage and disadvantage. For example, weather conditions can cause some material to decay over time. Iron can rust due to the influence of often rain and snow, its worst enemies. On the other hand wood, although more prone to mechanical damage than other materials is not affected by those factors as much.

Strong and reliable materials like stone, granite or concrete are relieved from those worries but they have other issues. They are usually very heavy, so once you made up your mind about their placement, it would be very hard to move them around. In difference to lighter benches these do last a life time without any problem. You just have to wipe an occasional layer of piled dust.

To prevent damage and prolong the life longevity of your garden bench use a protective sheet to cover it. Make sure you use one that is water resistant. If you have a wooden garden bench, clean it once in a while to prevent the growing of mildew.

Another thing to remember is that every material requires different surrounding. You don't have to be a gardening expert to figure out that plastic bench is not suitable for a romantic setting. For that you need a nice iron or wood bench, or some combination of both. You can additionally play with garden lighting to achieve some interesting effects.

Now that you have heard some of the benefits and detriments of garden bench materials, you can decide what will work the best for your own garden settings. Make sure you predict as accurately as possible the purpose of your bench, because this may set a difference between the bench that lasts a few years and the one that lasts a life time.
