Choosing the Right Funeral Poems
By Christine O'Shea
Funeral poems do not need to be sad or tearful, as long
as they reflect the character of the person you have
lost. You should always remember that the funeral is a
way to celebrate their life, not their death. Losing a
loved one is always hard; whether you have had to deal
with loss before or not, so don't try to be a rock, take
the time to grieve. The best poems for funerals are ones
which you can visualize your loved one through, a
certain word, phrase or even the entire poem should feel
as if it was written about them.
We have lost three family members so far this year and
it is only April, our family has had its fair share of
choosing and reading in loving memory poems, and here is
a little insight into what we found.
Going through some of the funeral poems with friends and
family members really helps; some of the poems may make
you laugh because they are such the complete opposite of
the person you've just lost that you have a good laugh
about it. Some of the poems will make you and others
around you cry because you can see them in each word or
verse, this is also good as it helps with the grieving
and healing process.
Some of the best funeral poems only need to be read once
for you to see your loved one in them, don't try to read
too much into any one poem, you may just be forcing the
verse into how others saw the deceased, the funeral
poems should feel natural. Many people call funeral
poems "death poems", I for one really hate this
expression, as I said earlier everything about the
funeral should reflect the person's life.
If you were very close to the person who died and you
are expected to stand up in church or at the graveside
to recite a poem, make sure that you have a supporter. A
supporter is someone who you know and trust who can take
over from you if you start to become overwhelmed, don't
worry this is very natural, even the biggest and
toughest men break down in these situations.
Looking for the best poems for funerals is not an easy
task at the best of times. I know some of what you are
feeling right now which is why I wrote this article.
If you are still looking for in loving memory poems, I
have written more on the subject which I hope you may
find useful.
Some of the best funeral poems are written by ordinary
people with no background in poetry. When a death occurs
we seem to be able to find the right words, all we need
is a little inspiration - I hope you find the
inspiration and right words to express your feelings at
this sad time.
