3 Keys to a Memorable Memorial Service
By Kaylee Patterson
Someone you loved dearly has passed on and you want to
have a memorial service that will truly capture who they
were and how they touched everyone they met. There are a
lot of things to think about and organize when planning
a memorial service, however, there are only three things
you need to focus on that will make it a day that will
live on in the hearts of all who attend. Spend time on
these three things and I guarantee this will be a day
everyone will remember.
1) Location. Funeral homes are depressing and I would
only consider your local church if your loved one was
truly passionate about their faith. Passion, actually,
is the thing to think about here. What did they love
most in life? Did they have a passion for animals? Have
the memorial service at the zoo. Did they spend all
their time in the water? Swoon at the sound of the
ocean? Rent out a boat for the day. My Grandpa goes
golfing three or four times a week, we plan on having
his memorial at the golf course. You can have the
service almost anywhere you can think of, and if it
compliments the passions in that persons life everyone
there will know it and will know how much love and
effort you put into planning the event.
2) Speakers. If you are going to have a main speaker,
make sure it was someone who was close to the person who
has passed. Sincerity and love will radiate from all
they have to say. Ask a few different people ahead of
time to get up and tell stories. By giving them some
warning a few days before they will be sure to have
prepared the best memories to share. If there are young
ones, have them participate in some way, play an
instrument, sing a song or maybe just help with the
presentation.
3) Activities. Have at least one thing going on that
everyone can participate it. It can be as simple as
requesting people bring a picture to put into an album
or compile a list of memories from everyone. You can
also consider having memorial candles for people to
light, or have everyone join in song. Then consider
doing one special thing, such as planting a tree in
their honor or having a champagne toast.
If you spend time on making those three things special
you are guaranteed to have a memorial that will live on
in the memories of all who attend.
