Planning a Funeral Ahead of Time
By Sean Schopf
A preplanned funeral is a topic no one seems to want to
talk about, but thanks to being able to plan your
funeral ahead of time you no longer have to worry about
having surviving family members make decisions about
your final arrangements. Just about any funeral home can
assist you in making your final wishes clear which will
take an enormous burden off of your loved one shoulders.
The following tips should help.
Choose in advance which funeral home you want to handle
your final arrangements. Call and schedule an
appointment with the director for a preplanned
consultation. You will be asked to choose burial or
cremation. Costs can vary but generally cremation is
cheaper. Decide what type of memorial service if any you
would like. You should also make your wishes known about
what you want done with your remains. You can be
interred in a traditional cemetery setting or family
members can opt to take possession of your remains. It
would be wise to go ahead and choose your funerary urn.
Opting for a burial requires decisions on whether or not
you want a traditional funeral or a more contemporary
memorial service. Casket preference and funeral flowers
can and should be chosen in advance. Who will you want
to lead the funeral services? What type of song
selections would you like played.
Arrange for pre-payment of your funeral plan. During the
grief process your relatives may equate money spent as a
public show of how much they loved you but you can keep
them from being taken advantage of by having every
detail planned and paid for in advance.
Specify choice of cemetery if applicable. The funeral
director can work the cost of interment into your
pre-planning package. Choose a head stone and specify
what you want the inscription to read. Remember to
specify any charities you prefer in case someone would
like to donate in lieu of flowers. Finally copies of
your contract with the funeral home should be stored
with your other important papers such as life insurance
policies and your will.
