Funeral Urns - Choices to Honor Any
Loved One
By Melody Jamali
After the memorial service is over and the well wishers,
friends and extended family have left, you are still
left with some decisions to make. One of these is
selecting the "perfect" funeral urn. When you begin your
search, you will soon find that the options are
seemingly endless, and you may begin to feel a bit
overwhelmed. The important thing to remember is to take
your time. To assist you in making this important
decision, besides the obvious determination of material
type and color, there are other options to consider when
looking at funeral urns.
Urn Size
The easiest choice to make will be the urn size. There
are funeral urns for adults and funeral urns for
children and infants. There are also keepsake urns that
only hold a small amount of the cremains so that you and
the remaining members of the family can divide the
cremains up and each take a small memorial amount to
keep as each of you see fit.
Companion Urns
When a loved one passes away and their desire is to be
reunited with another loved one's cremains, consider
companion funeral urns. These urns are designed to
symbolically unite the cremains of two people that were
close in life. This could be spouses or siblings. The
compartment of a companion urn is designed to be large
enough to contain the cremains of two people. It's a
beautiful expression of unity after death.
Biodegradable Urns
These urns are designed to biodegrade back into the
earth or water and leave no trace other than the ashes
that they contained, which are pure and will not
adversely affect land or water. Biodegradable funeral
urns are a great way to "scatter" ashes without having
to handle the cremains. Bury the urn or drop it into the
sea or lake and feel confident that the urn will leave
no trace.
Military Urns
If you are burying a fallen soldier, whether they died
in active duty or lived a full life in the military,
they deserve the dignity of being honored in death as
they were in life. Look at a variety of military funeral
urns before deciding on one style in particular. There
are many beautiful urns made with the familiar blue
shade of the military or you can opt for a simple wooden
box to hold your loved one's cremains.
Whatever your choices end up being for your loved one,
funeral urns will likely be their final resting place,
so make sure it's a good fit with the way they lived
their life.
