How To Decide Rather to Hold a Funeral
or a Memorial Service
By David Brian Smith
In making a decision between hosting a Memorial Service
or Funeral it is important to understand Why our Society
holds such Services in the first place, and a person
involved in the planning should have an understanding of
the differences between the two types of Gatherings.
Ritualistic Practices following a death have taken place
as far back in history as Human Society Itself.
"Families and Communities gathered to show respect, and
to jointly mourn," says J. Dawson a professional
Memorial Planner at Memorial Service Help.
A Funeral in general is a traditional, formal Ceremony,
usually held in a Funeral Parlor or a Faith Based
Ceremonial Facility, with the body of the Descendant
present. Often times spiritual songs or hymns are sung,
eulogies are spoken, and Notable Quotes or Scriptures
are recited. A Funeral is implemented according to
Descendant or Family belief's. In order to personalize
Services, Funeral Parlor Personnel may offer printed,
photo embellished Remembrances, and invite a Loved One's
Family to provide pictures for the making of a DVD
Tribute, that may be shown on a big screen TV. It is
common practice today for a Reception Meal to take place
after the burial, at an independent facility such as a
restaurant or private home, due to unfavorable views
regarding eating at a Funeral Parlor.
Hosting a Memorial Service is a more recent practice.
Most of the time the Loved One's body is not present,
affording the flexibility of holding the Memorial
Service at a location alternate to a Funeral Parlor or a
Religious Facility, such as a Garden, Park, Lake, Beach,
Rental Hall, etc., and it is for this reason that this
type of Program is more customizable to Individual
needs. Memorial Services may be as simple as a Rose Bush
Planting Dedication, or as elaborate as adorning tables
with a table settings Kit from a Memorial Service
Supplier, and featuring an artistically expressive
Presentation.
Variations in Meal Sharing at the Service Location can
be diverse too, such as providing a snack, lunch, or
complete meal for Attendees. Indeed, more opportunity
exists to create a Celebration of Life atmosphere, or
rally Family and other Attendees to a worthy cause on
behalf of the Loved One. According to William Smith a
Memorial Celebration Supplier, when deciding to hold a
Funeral or host a Memorial Service, " Determine a Goal,
such as Renewing a Families Faith or Inspiring Hope, and
do Consider the emotional needs of the Attendees at this
time, as well as the Personality of the Loved One."
