Life and Death, Your Dash
By Jeffrey A. Betman
Unfortunately, I attended the funeral of a good family
friend today. My dad and this gentleman have known each
other since they were boys. The couple was married
almost 55 years (2 months shy). Wow. Long time.
Funeral was packed. This gentleman left a good legacy of
love, family, respect, and fun. His wife gave one of the
eulogies, where she was reading a piece of paper
somebody had handed her the day before. I am
paraphrasing here, so you will get the gist, but maybe
not every exact detail. His wife talked about the fact
that on a grave marker, there are two dates. Your date
of birth and date of death, separated by a dash.
The dash is the key.
The dash is your life.
The dash is how you live your life.
The dash is the most important mark on the grave marker.
We don't know our ending date. All we know is what we do
with our dash. How are you spending your time? Are you
doing what you want to be doing? Are you with who you
want to be with? What kind of legacy are you building to
leave behind? Are you touching and impacting the lives
of those you come in contact with? The dash is life.
Your life.
We all have dashes. The question is, what are you doing
with yours? Is life easy or hard for you? Are you
working on your priorities or getting caught up in the
daily grind? Do you feel rested and alive everyday? Or
are you dragging through the day? Are you relaxed or
stressed? What about family and friends? Do you show and
tell them how you feel about them? Do you share your
love openly and freely? Or do you just figure that you
do not have to show them, they just know. Better to show
them.
Where are you at expressing and feeling gratitude on a
daily basis? I start my morning with gratitude to get me
off to a great start. Are you moving your body everyday?
Nourishing your mind, body, and soul? All this is what
the dash is all about. Your life. Your dash.
